OVERVIEW

Puerto is a Resort Town located in the north-eastern shoreline of Oriental Mindoro. lt is the eastern half of the island of Mindoro, an island which is the third largest in the Philippine archipelago. The island is south-west of Metro Manila.

Puerto Galera itself is about seventy (70) statute miles away from Metro Manila, and can either be reached by seacraft straight from Manila, or by land transportation from Manila to Batangas City (100 kms), and by ferryboat onwards to Puerto Galera. The land travel takes between one and a half to two hours ride depending on the traffic situation, while the connecting boat ride takes either forty minutes or one and a half hours depending on the ferryboat taken.

Puerto Galera has one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world. Puerto Galera was the place of refuge for the Spanish Galleonsin times of storm or for a recreational stop-over for the crews after months at sea when this was a gateway for the galleons on the way to
and from Spain, Mexico, China, India, Sumatra and Java.

Mindoro, the island on which Puerto Galera is located at the North East Coast, was named from a contraction of "mina del oro" or "mines of gold" after the Spanish founded the local community with the consecration of the Church in 1572.

The international cuisine availabel in Puerto Galera is remarkable... specialty restaurants serve the bountiful seafood and traditional German, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Australian, Korean, Japanese,Philippine and Continental cuisine.

Mountains covered with tropical rainforest, waterfalls and beautiful secluded sandy beaches make Puerto Galera an ideal holiday destination for the whole family.

CLIMATE

Puerto Galera has a tropical climate with a relatively high humidity. The average annual humidity is 84.6%. There is no definite dry season, but from July until the middle of October the occasional typhoon that usually passes the island of Mindoro can bring heavy rainfall for about three consecutive days, which usually are followed by up to two weeks of nice weather. The months of November till February are cool, and dry with temperatures of about 28 degrees Celsius. March to June are considered the Filipino Summer season with hot and dry weather. Temperatures are usually above 30 degrees Celsius then.

SPORTS

Puerto Galera offers its visitors a wide choice of sports. Most practiced are of course swimming, scuba-diving, snorkeling, boating, sailing, surfing, kayaking, and fishing. The natural beauty of the island makes walks and hikes a real pleasure. For the more adventurous trekking through the jungle and the mountains could be a real challenge. It is advisable to ask around for a knowledgeable guide when you venture of the beaten track.

HOW TO GET THERE

Puerto Galera can only be reached via land routes from Manila to Batangas. After completion of the so-called Sky Way near Manila and the partial completion of the new highway from Tanuan to Lipa City the travel time to Batangas has been considerably reduced. However a travel time to Batangas Pier of two hours from Manila has to be counted with.
From Batangas there are several ferryboat services that can bring their passengers to Puerto Galera in one or two hours, depending on the choice of ferry.

Relatively spoken a little more expensive, but without doubt are the Sikat and MV Super 85 Ferry and Bus Services. They transport their passengers by bus, coaster or van (depending on demand) directly to Batangas Pier, where the ferries can be boarded almost immediately. Since there are no stop-overs and no waiting time for the ferryboats, they are definately the fastest and the most conenient way to get to and from Puerto Galera:
